Fun Facts- Getting to know your body!

Have you ever wondered what your ideal body weight should be, or how much protein to eat and how much fluid to drink during the day? There are general guidelines that dietitians use to assess individual needs based on gender, height, and weight. Below are some of the tools you can use to better guide you to what your body needs!

Ideal Body Weight

Men: IBW = 106 lbs for first 5 feet + 6 lbs for each inch over 5 feet
Women: IBW = 100 lbs for first 5 feet + 5 lbs for each inch over 5 feet
*For the individual under 5 feet, subtract 2 pounds for each inch under 5 feet

Frame Size Adjustment
Add or subtract 10% IBW:
Large frame: IBW + (IBW x 0.10)
Small frame: IBW - (IBW x 0.10)

Obesity Adjustment
Adjusted ideal body weight (AIBW) is calculated as follows:
Men: AIBW = [(actual weight – IBW) x 0.38] + IBW
Women: AIBW = [(actual weight – IBW) x 0.32] + IBW

Fluid Requirements
Weight (kg) x 30 mL = mL fluid required daily
(To get weight in kg, take your weight in lbs and divide by 2.2)

Protein Requirements
Weight (kg) x 0.8 gm= g protein required daily
(if malnourished, protein depleted, pregnant, or wound healing multiply by 1.0-1.5)

Energy Requirements
Owen Equation
Men: 879 + (10.92 X weight in Kg)
Women: 795 + (7.18 X weight in kg)
